It's...I have problems with Conrad's prose. It's opaque and unwieldy, which I can hardly fault him for considering English wasn't his native language. It is a serious impediment to my enjoyment of his work.<br /><br />However, the themes and ideas of his novels are very moving. He wrote about the dark side of colonialism when it had apologists everywhere. He delved into the nature of humanity, with all of its irrationality, in a way that mirrors Dostoevsky. As a novel of ideas, <i>Heart of Darkness</i> is a serious and worthwhile read. Aesthetically, it is lacking. However, that's just my opinion.
