I just read fast, plus there were four months there where I was unemployed, which exaggerated the book count quite a bit (I'll be surprised if I read more than 150 books next year if I decide to keep the same teaching job I have).

Seems like we have quite a few reads in common, if almost a third of your 2008 reads (and a few prior year reads) match mine :D

If there's overlap between our reading list, the hypothesis that comes to mind is that we're in contact with the same book publicists. =)

Besides, just because we read a particular book doesn't mean we'll both like it (and to what degrees if we love/hate it).

True, although review copies/galleys make up maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of my reading at best (I think it's maybe closer to 1/5), but perhaps it's just simply a matter of swimming in a similarly small book pond, I suppose.

You made me die with envy ;) You read more than one book daily. Damn :D
Anyway I'll not go with my lists here, I'll say only that in the immediate future I'll read Ekaterina Sedia's novels and anthology, "Paper Cities".
And also I'll buy some new hardcover novels of Jose Saramago. New in my country I mean, there is a publishing house which has an offer for holidays you pay 2 books and get 3, and one of the authors on the offer is Saramago :)

I'm dumbfounded. How did you do this?
This year I'm really happy to read 37 books so far. Most of them in English, which takes some more time because I'm not a native speaker.

In order to read so many books I
- have to give up my job
- leave my family
- stop any internet activities

But I don't want to do this.
So I'm glad to read between 30 and 40 books per year and enjoy them.

And to be honest I'm not jealous.

I feel the same as Charles, heh.
I was doing the body count just the other day and I found, to my utter dismay, that in 2008 I read only 150+ books (so far; I still intend to read a dozen more until the year is done) - much less than I read when I was studying for my PhD, for example.

But your list is an inspiration - and should I say how good I feel to read that an US reader can read in Spanish and Portuguese? There are not many people there who can do this (in all honesty, I should say the opposite is also true - there are many Brazilian friends of mine who can read in English, but most of them would rather read in Portugues, because they find it most difficult.)

Be that as it may, you´ve inspired me to do better in 2009. Thank you, Larry!!

(And soon I´ll post in PWT my own list!)
