October 3 Book Porn

Five books bought or sent to me today. The first one pictured is the single one sent to me by a publisher; I bought the other four for various reasons.

Left: Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle (graphic novel of an apparently original story, done by the Dabel Brothers); Kevin P. Spicer, Hitler's Priests: Catholic Clergy and National Socialism (don't be surprised if a more formal and "academic" review than normal of this 2008 release appears here in the near future, as my grad research for my MA dealt with the tangled nature of the relationships between the National Socialists and the Catholic Church.)

Left: Tim Powers, The Anubis Gates (I enjoyed Powers' Last Call and The Stress of Her Regard and since many laud this as being his best work, I'm curious to say the least); Henrik Eberle and Matthias Uhl (eds.), The Hitler Book: The Secret Dossier Prepared for Stalin, From the Interrogations of Hitler's Personal Aides (again, professional curiosity about what might have been stashed away in the Kremlin, although I suspect there'll be many points upon which I'll disagree with the conclusions, due to the nature and paucity of the witnesses involved); St. Teresa of Ávila, The Way of Perfection (OK, I like reading Catholic spiritual books on occasion, so sue me or something...)

Don't know when I'll have the time to read these, but almost certainly not tomorrow, as my youngest brother is getting married in the afternoon and I'm a member of the wedding. Needless to say, I'm in an excited frame of mind.

I'd love to read the Dresden Files story. Unfortunately my vision is poor enough that I can't really follow graphic novels. But I heard Butcher talking about producing his graphic adaptations on the Dragon Page podcast, and it sounded neat.

I'm not too sure that The Anubis Gates is his best but it IS the gateway book for most people. Probably 80% of people who have read Powers work read AG first. With all of that said it is one hell of wild book though :)

Brian, I thought it might be something like that. Regardless, my curiosity is piqued and I'll likely read it in a couple of weeks when my Fall Break arrives.

Seth, too bad about the vision problems, as the artwork (done by the Dabel Brothers) looks really nice.
